Solar Course

_____________

Description
This course will describe design and installation requirements for the design and installation for photovoltaics in the residential and small commercial facilities. It will include insulation characteristics, photovoltaic panels, site analysis, batteries, charge controllers, inverters and the balance of system equipment. Canadian Electrical Code interpretation will also be examined.

Outcomes

The learner will be able to:

    1. Identify the relative potential solar energy available at a particular location.
    2. Understand the photovoltaic panel operation.
    3. Describe site issues for the installation of the panels.
    4. Understand the two basic system designs (with and without batteries).
    5. Describe the differences between the different types of batteries.
    6. Understand the role of charge controllers.
    7. Understand and select inverter types for the design applications.
    8. Calculate the wire size, type and limitations as per the Canadian Electrical Code.
    9. Calculate protection for the photovoltaic system in either fuse or breaker use.
